About
Range Borders was established by Emily Hirst in Summer 2018, after she identified a need for skilled and sympathetic gardening services in the area. Having recently juggled a demanding full-time job alongside busy family life and a characteristic Whalley Range property requiring more than a little TLC, Emily understands the value of a sensitively maintained garden for enjoyment and relaxation, and not as an additional source of stress.
Emily holds a full RHS Level 2 Diploma in the Principles and Practices of Horticulture (awarded with commendation), following attendance at classes held at Cheadle College, Stockport and Ordsall Hall in Salford, and the completion of the required written exams. She is now working towards the RHS Level 3 certificates on a self-study basis.
Emily has volunteered at Hulme Community Garden Centre; she is a regular weekly volunteer at the new RHS Bridgewater garden in Salford, and also provides support to her local community gardening group, the ‘Whalley Rangers’.
Emily holds a lower tier Waste Carrier’s License and is appropriately insured. She is a member of The Gardeners Guild and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture.

This summer has been the season of the sewing machine - conveniently coinciding with numerous damp days and a tediously long period of post-viral malaise. I’ve had the sewing machine for fifteen years but have never really got to grips with it. However, with the help of YouTube clips, advice from skilled friends, and assistance from a very helpful family of monkeys, I’ve conjured up a few bits and bobs, made mostly from preloved shirts and jeans, procured from local charity shops.
If there are any designs here that take your fancy, drop me a line on emily@rangeborders.co.uk with your requests and colour preferences, and I will dive into my shirt stash to see what I can put together. I can also advise you on how to pay, and also calculate postage and packing for you, if you aren’t local to South Manchester.
